Through the Storm: Mastering Anxiety with Resilience – Tip 1

Do you also sense increased anxiety and nervousness around you?

People worry about all sorts of things—work, health, even minor concerns like household chores. They become irritable, struggle to fall asleep or stay asleep…

I admit that the rising levels of anxiety, which I sometimes experience myself, have pushed me to share tips and strategies to navigate this storm.

This is the first in a series of articles I’m calling: Through the Storm: Mastering Anxiety with Resilience.

These will be practical, applicable techniques that I use in my practice with clients. My goal? To inspire those who don’t want to suffer unnecessarily.

Understanding Anxiety

Anxiety… Those who have experienced it don’t like either the feeling or the word itself. It is one of the most common mental health conditions worldwide. Everyone has felt some form of anxiety—though not all at the same intensity.

Anxiety is a reaction to a perceived threat. When triggered, the amygdala sends signals that increase the likelihood of an attack mode response. As a result, cortisol and adrenaline flood the bloodstream.

A short-term spike in these hormones isn’t a problem. In fact, you need some level of them to get out of bed in the morning and maintain a healthy immune system. The issue arises when these stress hormones remain elevated for too long. But we’ll explore that another time.

Tip 1: Perceive Anxiety as Energy

• You’ve heard it before—people telling you to “calm down.” But honestly, doesn’t that phrase often have the opposite effect?
• You can’t just sit still and relax after drinking seven strong coffees in an hour.
• Energy flows. It doesn’t need to be suppressed, but it can be directed and used.
Move! Move! Move! Stand up, run, change locations, take a walk, or shift your posture. Simply change something physical. Remember: EMOTION comes from MOTION.
• Once you’ve moved your body, a calming mindfulness exercise may actually work better for you.

By liking and sharing, you help spread inspiration to people who need it. Never underestimate the power of community.
